Trevor Hemmings has ruled Many Clouds out of a repeat bid at the Hennessy Gold Cup following his seasonal debut at Wetherby on Saturday.
While the owner was satisfied with the Crabbie's Grand National winner's display in finishing sixth to Cue Card in the Charlie Hall Chase, he feels it might be best to give Newbury a miss this year.
"When you up against horses as good as Cue Card and Dynaste and so on and you are giving them a lot of weight, we just said go out do your best, enjoy it and make sure the horse feels good and comes back safe and sound," Hemmings told Racing UK.
"As much as our trainer (Oliver Sherwood) would have liked to have taken him there you can't expect a horse to carry 16lb more weight than he carried last time in a race as competitive as that and expect him to come out unscathed.
"I think the horse has served us well over the last 12 months and maybe we should look at the National and work back from there. Let him learn his jumping again and bring him to his peak, hopefully for a Grand National run."
