Joe Fanning escaped serious injury following a fall from Baileys Galaxy in the vertem.co.uk Handicap at Newcastle.

He was unshipped from the Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old two furlongs out when making his way from the rear into about sixth place and trying to get into contention.

The extended mile-and-a-half heat was won comfortably by the 6/4 favourite The Resdev Way for trainer Richard Whitaker and jockey Barry McHugh.

Fanning was taken off his ride in the second race, the Richard Guest-trained Bollihope, and unfortunately for him missed a winner as the 20/1 chance obliged under stand-in Jason Hart.

He returned to the saddle to take up his mount in the fourth race, finishing unplaced on Dominating.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong had said following the Baileys Galaxy incident: "He's been stood down for the second race and was being assessed for the rest of the evening.

"He basically seems okay. He's just a little bit stiff, I think."
