While trainer Michael Bell was out of luck in Dubai with stable star Big Orange, the Newmarket handler enjoyed a winner in his absence after the talented but fragile six-year-old claimed the 10-furlong Listed contest by two and a quarter lengths.

John Warren, racing adviser to Her Majesty, said of the 13-8 winner, who was ridden by Andrea Atzeni: "He is a lovely, genuine horse. We were sending him over further early on, but I think everyone worked out a mile and a quarter is his bag.

"He got a beautiful ride and Michael has done terribly well training him, as he has not been a straightforward horse to train. He's had his aches and pains, but he has got through all of that and come out the other side

"I think the trainer was earmarking the Brigadier Gerard Stakes if he won today. That seems to be the next logical step for him."

John Gosden already has plenty of Classic contenders on his hands and Crossed Baton could become another following his success in the Matchbook Betting Exchange EBF Novice Stakes.

Marco Botti snapped up the son of Oasis Dream for 25,000 guineas in October and the former John Gosden-trained gelding opened his account for his new handler on his third start, taking the one-mile-three prize by three-quarters of a length. Botti said of the well-backed 6-1 winner: "He definitely enjoyed it in front. They left him alone, which was probably a big plus. The horse had good form last year and he was a bargain at the sales. "When John Gosden had him he won a couple of times making the running. I just think he likes to be left alone to do his own thing. He will probably stay another furlong or two. "Daniel (Muscutt) gave him a great ride and got him into a nice rhythm. This race had been the plan for a while." Hannon said: "He is a star. No one gets him like Hollie Doyle. He has been unlucky in a few. The mare (Cake) was quite small, but very fast. He is a horse that could go close in something like a Stewards' Cup, but he seems to like going round a bend." reopens Repton (100-30) completed a treble for Marlborough handler Hannon when holding the late advances of Ascot Day by half a length in the Bet At racinguk.com Handicap.
