SAN FRANCISCO" Patrick Peterson was almost a member of the Eagles, and he had no inklingthat was a possibility. The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback is the star of the Cardinals' secondary, but if not for a few lockout-related hiccups five years ago, he would be a bird of a different feather. MORE: Best footballCardinals players of all time "It was crazy, I had no idea," Peterson told Sporting News on Wednesday afternoonin response to a recent revelation from former Eagles president Joe Banner. "The draft was so weird, I was out of the loop on pretty much everything." The Eagles were looking to move quarterback Kevin Kolb prior to the 2011 NFL Draft, and a trade was in place that would net them the No. 5 pick from Arizona. No deals were allowed to go through during the lockout, however, sothe Eagles were not able to jump up to fifth, where Banner said they would have selected the LSU star. "The original trade was (for) the fifth pick, which we were targetingPatrick Petersonfor, and the second-round pick for (2012)," Banner said on a recent episode ofESPN's "NFL Insiders. "Because there was a lockout, we weren't allowed to make trades leading into the draft, or elsePatrick Peterson would've been a Philadelphia Eagle." MORE: When Patrick Peterson wore green; as an elf Instead, the Cardinals drafted Peterson at No. 5. Afterthe lockout ended, the Eagles dealt Kolb to the Cardinals for defensive backDominique Rodgers-Cromartie. "I am so grateful to the Cardinals, but it's funny," Peterson, who attended Super Bowl week as part of Old Spice's new Hardest Working Collection, said. "I never had a single conversation with the Cardinals. I didn't even know what the area code (for Phoenix)was. I heard some speculation in the green room, maybe Houston. But I had no idea Arizona was interested whatsoever." The Cardinals bluffed their way into landing a player who is widely considered one of the top three cornerbacks in the league. "Apparently they wanted to disguise the fact that they wanted me. But it was intriguing. I never spoke to them. Never had one talk or discussion with the Cardinals. Had no idea they wanted me at all," he said. Luckily for Peterson and the Cardinals, everything has worked out. If only the Eagles were so lucky. More...
